Signature Count FAQs
Answering some questions about your petition signatures
Changing Your Signature Goal
Your public signature goal is there to help engage and energize your supporters - it’s not meant to reflect how many signatures are needed for your petition to succeed. This is why there’s no option to manually set or change your goal. As you get closer to a milestone, the system automatically increases the goal to the next tier.
For example, your petition might start with a goal of 5, 100, or 500 signatures—even if your personal target is much higher (like 600). This is by design: a smaller, achievable goal helps build early momentum and shows progress quickly, which can motivate more people to sign. Once you reach that goal, the system will update it to the next one.
If you’re aiming for a specific number (e.g. 600 signatures to present to a decision maker), you can always mention this in your petition text or updates.
Once you feel your petition has achieved its goal, regardless of the signature count, you can go ahead and declare Victory!
Does the signature count look different on the download as compared to the petition dashboard?
There are a few reasons why the number of signatures on your petition page may differ from the count in your downloaded file:
- It can take up to 24 hours for recent signatures to appear in your download, especially during high activity periods. Try waiting a bit, then downloading again.
- If a signer didn’t verify their email address, their signature may not be counted.
- Signatures from invalid or suspicious email addresses (e.g. those containing “+” or starting with “info”) may be automatically removed, which can cause slight fluctuations in the total count.
- Signers also have the option to remove their signature if they change their mind.
